Tuesday 9 June 2009: Especially for those of us who appreciated solid trains with unique riding characteristics. Real air conditioning as per open the window or enjoy the draught through the doors. The final bonus was that you could see out of the window.Pictures of variable quality but what I photographed is what you get (No touchng up on this site!). Anyway, enjoy and if you are daft enough to ride on the new EMUs for pleasure just look at what you could have had.

Classic EMU (Southern)

Thursday 26 March 2009: With the imminent withdrawal of the last slam door stock EMU on the national network this seems to be a good time to publish a selection of Southern EMU.... taken when I used to travel regularly on the Southern for pleasure. I now avoid the Southern like the plague (aside from a trip to Folkestone Harbour behind Oliver Cromwell on 13/03/09).

Classic DMU Part 1 (Upto 1983)

Wednesday 5 November 2008: A selection of real DMUs taken during the early 1980s. As expected there is a bias towards the Cambridge area but it appers that when ever I travelled on a Free Pass the chance was taken to get a picture. The units are a totally different beast from the present day offerings.... I know which ones I prefer and they do not have sliding doors!

Saturday 7 June 2008: Not quite as good as Class 20 or 37 locos but at least there was something decent to ride around the Southern on and they usually made enough noise in the motor coach to keep most of us happy. Fortunately quite a few have gone to preserved railways and I eagerly await a chance to have a ride on one over the Norh Yorkshire Moors. Unfortunately I never took a picture of one passing Shepreth Branch Junction in May 1978 (Visiting Spalding for the Flower Festival) because I had to attend to my signalling duties....

Monday 24 March 2008: A selection of pictures with a common denominator:signals.They have been taken from all over the country,from the Medway Valley to Stirling but there appears to be a bias towrds East Anglia.Some pictures are lurking elsewhere within this site but have a trawl.

Saturday 22 March 2008: A mixture of shunters from various locations taken during my travels and whilst at work. Most were taken as a second thought, not realising that they would be relatively scarce today.A few preserved ones have been included but they never looked that pristine in real life for very long !

Preserved Diesels

Thursday 7 February 2008: In order to prove that I am not a dinosaur (despite what my colleagues at work might think) here is a selection of pictures taken on preserved railways over the last few years. Whilst I had not been particulary keen on these railways it has to be admitted that they provide an ideal chance to ride behind the locomotives (and thus contribute to the upkeep of them as well as the railway) and enjoy the aural delights.
